From Farmers to Families: Feeding Hope After the Cebu Earthquake

When the earth shook beneath Cebu on the night of September 30, 2025, at precisely 9:59 PM, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck near Bogo City in northern Cebu, causing widespread destruction across the region. In those terrifying moments, thousands of families faced uncertainty, fear, and the daunting reality of starting over. But amid the tremors and the aftermath, we witnessed something more powerful than fear, compassion moved faster than destruction, and hope rose stronger than despair.

In the immediate wake of the disaster, AGREA and World Central Kitchen joined hearts and hands to bring not just nourishment, but dignity and hope to those affected. This partnership was born from a shared belief that in times of crisis, food is more than sustenance, it is love made visible, it is community in action, and it is the foundation of healing.

Together, we distributed 12,000 fresh food packs containing 96,000 kilos of fruits and vegetables and 113,000 kilos of rice. But these numbers tell only part of the story. What makes this response truly special is where the food came from: our dedicated Filipino farmers, especially the Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Cebu.

Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative, founded in 1973 by 70 small-scale farmers from the mountains of central Cebu, has grown into a beacon of hope for farming communities across the region. By sourcing relief goods from these farmers, we created a circle of care that empowered local agriculture while feeding families in crisis. This was not just relief—it was a statement that farmers are essential heroes in disaster response, that local food systems are the backbone of resilience, and that recovery must include those who feed us all.

World Central Kitchen, known for their rapid response to disasters worldwide, brought their expertise and unwavering commitment to feeding communities in crisis. Their team arrived in Cebu ready to work, ready to collaborate, and ready to ensure that no one went hungry in the aftermath of devastation. Together, we proved that global expertise combined with local knowledge creates something extraordinary—relief that is both effective and deeply rooted in community.

This response represents more than the sum of its parts. When we choose to source from local farmers, we ensure that relief work strengthens rather than bypasses local economies. When we partner with organizations like World Central Kitchen, we amplify our capacity to serve. And when we stand with communities like those in northern Cebu, we affirm that recovery is not just about rebuilding structures—it is about restoring hope, dignity, and the belief that better days are ahead.

To World Central Kitchen, we extend our deepest gratitude for standing beside us, for believing in the power of local food systems, and for showing up with compassion and action. To our farmers, especially the Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative, you are our everyday heroes who prove that those who cultivate the land also cultivate hope. And to Cebu, especially the communities in Bogo City and surrounding areas affected by the earthquake, we are with you as you rebuild, recover, and rise.

The images from our relief operations tell their own story—volunteers in red aprons carefully packing produce, teams holding bags of rice with the World Central Kitchen logo, sacks of onions and vegetables ready for distribution, and the smiles of those who know they are not alone. These moments capture the essence of bayanihan, the Filipino spirit of communal unity and cooperation that rises strongest in times of need.

As we reflect on this response, we are reminded that disaster relief is not just about meeting immediate needs—it is about planting seeds for long-term recovery. Every food pack distributed, every farmer supported, every partnership forged strengthens the fabric of community resilience. We are not just feeding families today; we are investing in a future where communities are stronger, where local agriculture thrives, and where no one faces crisis alone.

Together, we are planting hope and feeding resilience. Together, we are proving that from farmers to families, from crisis to recovery, from despair to hope—the path forward is built on compassion, collaboration, and the unwavering belief that every person deserves access to fresh, nutritious food, especially in their darkest hours.

This is our commitment. This is our promise. This is AGREA standing with Cebu, with our farmers, and with all those who believe that a better future is not just possible—it is already growing.
