Today, as we celebrate the International Day of Rural Women 2025, we are filled with profound gratitude and hope. This year's theme, "Rural Women: Cultivating Good Food for All," speaks directly to the heart of what we witness every day in our communities, women who are not just farming the land, but farming hope, dignity, and transformation.
Through our "Para sa BAJI" initiative in partnership with UN Women and the Municipality of Del Carmen, we have seen firsthand how rural women are the backbone of our food systems. From the moment they plant seeds in the soil to when they harvest fresh vegetables with proud smiles, from preparing nutritious meals for their families to distributing food throughout their communities, these women sustain us all. They are the quiet force behind every plate of food, the unseen hands that keep our world nourished.
When we look at the women in our programs, whether they're tending to their gardens in Marinduque or working the fields in Del Carmen, we see more than farmers. We see leaders who are cultivating resilience in the face of climate change, innovation in the face of scarcity, and community in the face of isolation. These women embody the truth that food security is not just about production; it is about people, dignity, and justice.

Our Women Food Producers Association (WFPA), which we established in 2020, stands as a testament to what happens when women are given the tools, training, and trust to lead. What began as a small group of women eager to learn has grown into a movement of changemakers who are redefining what it means to be a farmer in the Philippines. Through WFPA, women gain access to sustainable livelihood opportunities, fair markets, and most importantly, a platform where their voices are heard and valued. These are not just programs; they are pathways to empowerment.
The theme "Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All" reminds us that when we invest in rural women, we invest in the future of food itself. Women bring unique perspectives to agriculture, they prioritize nutrition, sustainability, and community wellbeing. They practice farming that is not only productive but also regenerative, ensuring that the land will continue to feed future generations. This is the essence of our vision: Zero Hunger, Zero Waste, and Zero Insufficiency.
Through "Para sa BAJI," which means "For Women" in the local dialect, we create spaces where women can gather, learn, and grow together. The vibrant mural that bears this name stands as a permanent reminder of the strength and resilience of rural women. When women raise their hands in our training sessions, wearing shirts that declare "Farming is Cool, Smart, Sexy, Humane," they are making a powerful statement about pride in their work and their identity as food producers.

This International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the women who wake before dawn to tend their crops, who carry their harvest with pride, who share their knowledge with neighbors, and who never give up on their dreams for their families and communities. We honor the women who have turned small plots of land into thriving gardens, who have transformed from caretakers into changemakers, and who prove every day that women are the heart of food security and nutrition.
But celebration alone is not enough. We must also commit to action. When gender equality and equity are practiced, when GEDSI (Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion) principles are embraced, agriculture becomes more than productive — it becomes a movement for dignity, inclusion, and lasting change. This is why we work tirelessly to ensure that no woman is left behind in building a nourished, empowered, and sustainable future for everyone.
The voices, leadership, and courage of rural women remind us daily why this work matters. They teach us that farming is not just an occupation; it is an act of love. They show us that when women rise, communities rise with them. They demonstrate that cultivating good food for all is not just a theme, it is a calling that they answer with passion and purpose every single day.

As we look to the future, we recommit ourselves to supporting rural women in all their endeavors. We will continue to provide education and training through our AGREA Farm School, to create fair market opportunities, to advocate for policies that protect and empower women farmers, and to build partnerships that amplify their voices and expand their impact. We will continue to stand with rural women because we know that their success is our success, their prosperity is our prosperity, and their future is our future.
To all the rural women out there planting seeds of change, harvesting hope, and feeding the world: we see you, we honor you, and we stand with you. Together, we are cultivating good food for all — and in doing so, we are cultivating a better world.
